Fret’s Music is an independent music shop in Riverside who hosts local bands almost nightly in a beautiful DIY space that recently was told to stop hosting shows.
Today we catch up with Fret’s Music to discuss how we can help get live music back to the IE!
ECZ: Introduce yourselves to our readers!
FRET’S: Forrest Kirby, Austin Kirby and Jordan Segura
ECZ: How long has Fret’s been in business for?
FRET’S: We opened August 24th, 2024 so about 6 months
ECZ: What motivated you to put on shows for the community?
FRET’S: Initially it was to get locals to check out the shop and to involve ourselves in the local IE music scene as much as possible
ECZ: What does the IE mean to you?
FRET’S: We all grew up here and took part in the music scene in different ways. The IE is our home. As we got older we saw a gap in our city of Riverside for a diy, non corporate owned music shop like so many other cities in the IE had. We got an opportunity to be that source for music and we took it
ECZ: How can we as a community help and support getting live music back at Fret’s?
FRET’S: At the moment, the problem is push back from city and zoning codes. Our music shop is not allowed to have music in it. For this, that, and the other. Best way to help us is to contact the city of Riverside zoning department, and a city council member and let them know Fret’s matters and what the scene was doing here is not dangerous. It’s full of support, creativity and just because a couple bad apples came by and decided to be disruptive doesn’t diminish that. Fret’s is here to do good for the music scene and support local musicians as an easy, diy friendly location for performers.
